Platonic Attraction Flag

Platonic Attraction flag by Weniviere.[1]

Platonic Attraction is a form of attraction that is defined as the desire to form a platonic relationship (also called a friendship) with a specific individual.

Sometimes a person may experience a strong platonic desire for someone, which can be mistaken for romantic attraction by those who do not feel said attraction. However, some may want to form what is called a queerplatonic relationship with someone who reciprocates their strong platonic attraction or alterous attraction.

The term for a platonic "crush" is a squish.

History[]

The word platonic is actually derived from the philosopher Plato. The reason for this is because his dialogue, the Symposium, which has as its topic the subject of love (or, generally, the subject of Eros). It discusses the possibilities of how the feeling of love began and how it has evolved (both sexually and non-sexually) and defines genuine platonic love as inspiring a person's mind and soul and directing their attention towards spiritual matters.[2]

From the Renaissance to the end of the 19th century, the term platonic love was also used as an euphemism for same-sex love.[3] After that it moved to the definition given above (referring to friendships).

Then on November 25th, 2020, the platonic attraction flag was made by Weniviere (from Cryptocrew).[1]
